Smilla’s Sense of Snow

smillassenseofsnowSmilla Jaspersen (Julia Ormond) looks into the death of a six-year-old boy in Copenhagen and finds connections with a powerful company and her own Greenlandic background. Director Bille August has turned literary epics into movies before, but this one turns out to be too much of a challenge. There isnā€™t much life in it until the second half when the action threatens to swamp the other ingredients. In short, itā€™s very uneven. There are moments when we want to learn more about Smilla, but August and Ormond ultimately fail in making her a truly engrossing lead character.
