Two energy company representatives (Matt Damon, Frances McDormand) arrive in a small Pennsylvania town, hoping to convince people to sign mineral rights leases, but they face resistance. Damon reunited with his Good Will Hunting director for a drama that addresses the contentious environmental and financial issues surrounding fracking. Based on a series of articles in the New York Times, the film has a nice small-town atmosphere and benefits from McDormand’s wry sense of humor, but it feels detached from reality in its final, make-believe moments.Â
