THEY’RE GIVING COMEDY A REWRITE.
The inexperienced Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling) is hired as a new writer on Katherine Newbury’s (Emma Thompson) late-night show, which is in dire need of a shake-up. Kaling brought her experience from late-night comedy and sitcoms to this film that addresses issues like aging and sexism in a part of show business that might come across as particularly cutthroat. Thompson represents the old, Kaling the new, and they’re both effective, especially the former as a legend who hates trying to keep up with a changing world. Delivers a few laughs, even if the material for Newbury’s show is frequently unconvincing.
