Penguin Bloom

After an accident during a holiday trip leaves Sam Bloom (Naomi Watts) partially paralyzed, she’s struggling to find meaning in her new life, in spite of her husband (Andrew Lincoln) and three sons. Based on a true story, the film follows a familiar formula where the leading character learns lessons about overcoming challenges, not least mental ones, pretty much the way every person who ends up in a wheelchair must do to move on with their lives. However, the film gets a kick out of a magpie chick who became an invaluable part of the Blooms. Sweet and engaging; Watts is great.

2021-Australia-U.S. 95 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Glendyn Ivin. Book: Cameron Bloom, Bradley Trevor Greive. Cast: Naomi Watts (Sam Bloom), Andrew Lincoln (Cameron Bloom), Griffin Murray-Johnston (Noah Bloom), Jacki Weaver, Rachel House, Felix Cameron.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by the Bloom couple; co-produced by Watts.
