A GRIM FAIRY TALE.
16-year-old Gretel (Sophie Lillis) and her younger brother (Sam Leakey) flee their home and end up in the care of an old woman (Alice Krige) who lives in a house deep in the woods. Holda’s home may not be made of sweets and gingerbread, but she makes sure the children are well fed, as you can imagine in this horror movie that provides the Grimm fairy tale with modern sensibilities. Well staged, a few interesting ideas (and an amusing Wizard of Oz reference), but ultimately too dull.
2020-U.S.-Canada-Ireland. 87 min. Color. Directed by Oz Perkins. Cast: Sophia Lillis (Gretel), Alice Krige (Holda), Sam Leakey (Hansel), Charles Babalola, Jessica De Gouw.
