Masters of Sex

mastersofsexFans of Mad Men could always enjoy the similar look and themes of this lushly produced drama series, even if it never reached similar heights. Based on actual events, the show followed the work of groundbreaking doctors Masters and Johnson (Michael Sheen, Lizzy Caplan) from the 1950s to early 1970s as they battled conservatism and prejudice while finding new, innovative and very controversial ways to research sex. At the same time, their personal lives were affected as well. Very uneven, and the story might have been best served as a miniseriesā€¦ but the cast was consistently top-notch and the brilliant first season did make us crave more. Beau Bridges and Allison Janney were particularly memorable and touching as a long-married couple grappling with his homosexuality.

2013-2016:U.S. 46 episodes. Made for TV. Color. Developed byĀ Michelle Ashford. Cast: Michael Sheen (William Masters), Lizzy Caplan (Virginia Johnson), Caitlin FitzGerald (Libby Masters), Annaleigh Ashford, Teddy Sears, Beau Bridges, Allison Janney (13-15), Julianne Nicholson (13-14), Nicholas D’Agosto (13-14).

Trivia: Inspired by Thomas Maierā€™s biography.
