The Thing

An American Antarctica expedition takes care of a dog that was hunted by seemingly insane Norwegians; little do they realize that the canine harbors something very alien and deadly.Ā This remake ofĀ The Thing From Another WorldĀ (1951) is closer to the original story and has more interesting themes; many critics thought the gruesome effects went too far, but the film has grown into a cult classic. Borderline ridiculous at times, but one canā€™t help admire makeup whiz Rob Bottinā€™s creativity and the director keeps a pretty good pace. Very Carpenter-esque score by Ennio Morricone.

1982-U.S. 108 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ John Carpenter. Story: John W. Campbell, Jr. (“Who Goes There?”). Music: Ennio Morricone. Makeup: Rob Bottin, and others. Cast: Kurt Russell (R.J. MacReady), Wilford Brimley (Blair), Richard Dysart (Copper), Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, T.K. Carter.

Trivia:Ā Donald Pleasence was allegedly considered for a role; Nick Nolte and Jeff Bridges for the part of MacReady. Followed by a prequel,Ā The ThingĀ (2011).
