Brad and Kate (Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon) have no intention of spending Christmas with their families, but a getaway attempt fails and they’re forced to face the music. The King of Kong (2005) director was hired for his first fiction feature, a Yuletide comedy that looks precisely like a dozen others. Seth Gordon may have done documentaries in his past, but very little in this film feels genuine. Two things we learn, sadly: 1) Get married and have kids or you’ll never be happy. 2) Not even five Oscar winners can turn a mediocre script into magic.
