HE WROTE THE BOOK ON LIFE’S BIG QUESTIONS. BUT THE TRUTH IS HE HASN’T GOT A CLUE.
The reclusive author Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels), who once wrote a brilliant book on how to talk with God, finds it far more difficult to communicate with friends, neighbors… and a woman (Lauren Graham) he’s attracted to. In his directing debut, John Hindman tries to paint a complex portrait of its main protagonist and gets a lot of help from Daniels who’s terrific as the egotistical elitist. Unfortunately, the movie as a whole (and even Faber to some extent) is shallowly written and never turns funny or touching enough.
2009-U.S. 96 min. Color. Written and directed by John Hindman. Cast: Jeff Daniels (Arlen Faber), Lauren Graham (Elizabeth), Lou Taylor Pucci (Kris Lucas), Olivia Thirlby, Kat Dennings, Nora Dunn.
