The Man in the Iron Mask

FOR THE HONOR OF A KING. AND THE DESTINY OF A COUNTRY. ALL FOR ONE.Ā

In 17th-century France, three musketeers rescue a man in an iron mask (Leonardo DiCaprio) who’s been imprisoned for a long time; he turns out to be Philippe, King Louis XIV’s identical twin… The Braveheart writer’s directing debut is an adventure that reunites D’Artagnan with the three aging musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis. Long but entertaining and good-looking, with amusingly showy casting in the case of Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich and GĆ©rard Depardieu. The film got unfairly dumped on by some critics for providing then-teen heartthrob DiCaprio with a challenging dual part, but he acquits himself nicely.

1998-U.S. 132 min. Color. Written and directed byĀ Randall Wallace. Novel: Alexandre Dumas (“The Vicomte de Bragelonne”). Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio (Louis XIV/Philippe), Jeremy Irons (Aramis), John Malkovich (Athos), GĆ©rard Depardieu (Porthos), Gabriel Byrne, Anne Parillaud… Peter Sarsgaard, Hugh Laurie.

Razzie: Worst Screen Couple (DiCaprio as twins).
