After a two-year hiatus from her job as a movie star, Geena Davis made a comeback as Angie, an Italian-American woman who’s involved with Vinnie (James Gandolfini) but starts dating an Irishman (Stephen Rea). Then she finds out she’s pregnant… This is a tailor-made part for Davis, and her leading men also deliver their performances with aplomb. The obligatory, loud Italian family threatens to make the movie too clichéd, but as Angie’s life takes an unexpected turn with the birth of her sick child, the smooth transition from laughs to tears helps matters greatly.
