The Kid Stays in the Picture

SUCCESS. SCANDAL. SEX. TRAGEDY. INFAMY. AND THAT’S JUST THE FIRST REEL…

In 1994, famed movie mogul Robert Evans released his autobiography ”The Kid Stays in the Picture”. The title alludes to the dream he nurtured as a rookie in the business, to one day be like Darryl F. Zanuck, the one calling the shots. When the book was turned into this documentary its author was used as narrator, which is a good idea. From the way he presents his life story, we can sense the personality – Evans may be narcissistic, charming and goal-oriented but there’s a streak of darkness, of tragedy and loneliness. He lived quite a tumultuous Hollywood life and this is fascinating stuff for any movie buff. As a documentary however, it’s rather slight; Evans’s hypnotic voice carries it a long way.

2002-U.S. 93 min. Color. Directed by Nanette Burstein, Brett Morgen. Narrated by Robert Evans.

Trivia: The book was later turned into a stage play.
