Paterson

BEAUTY IS OFTEN FOUND IN THE SMALLEST DETAILS.

After letting us hang with vampires for a while in Only Lovers Left Alive (2014), Jim Jarmusch brought us back to a more grounded existence. We spend a week with a New Jersey bus driver (Adam Driver), who writes poems in his spare time, and his girlfriend (Golshifteh Farahani) who’s hoping to be discovered as a country singer. Nothing much happens here, but Jarmusch gives us ample time to enjoy the amusing details (and poetry) of their life together. Driver is particularly good as the melancholic bus driver whose relationship seems to make him somewhat uncomfortable.

2016-U.S. 118 min. Color. Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. Cast: Adam Driver (Paterson), Golshifteh Farahani (Laura), William Jackson Harper (Everett), Chasten Harmon, Barry Shabaka Henley, Rizwan Manji… Method Man.

Trivia: Most of the poems in the film were written by Ron Padgett.
