The Devil All the Time

Donald Ray Pollockā€™s well-received debut novel was probably never going to be easy to adapt, as it shifts perspectives between several characters who initially donā€™t seem all that related to each other. Playing out over two decades, we meet a young WWII veteran, two false preachers and a couple of serial killers who are also lovers, among others; the evil effects of religion is a key theme. In a good lead performance, Tom Holland holds this somewhat rambling film together. Much of it looks like a traditional Southern tall tale, sweaty and intense, and that goes a long way.
