A Prayer Before Dawn

Young Brit Billy Moore (Joe Cole) tries to make a living as a boxer in Thailand, but canā€™t stay away from drugs; after getting arrested, heā€™s sent to a hellhole of a prisonā€¦ The easy comparison is Midnight Express (1978), another reality-based story about a white man trying to survive under horrible circumstances in a prison far from home. Not always compelling, but the filmmakers did try to depict Mooreā€™s situation as earnestly as possible, staying grounded as the camera records the bodies, tattoos, dirt, blood, suffering, with no sentimentality whatsoever. Raw and powerful, with a fully committed performance by Peaky Blinders star Cole.
