The Final Year

The director, who’s made several documentaries about America’s role in the world, got access to President Barack Obama and his foreign-policy team during the administration’s last year. We follow Obama himself, Secretary of State John Kerry, U.N. ambassador Samantha Power, Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes and others as they deal with global conflicts and visit countries where America has not always played a positive role (like Vietnam). We also get glimpses of their family lives as well as arguments between them; the idealistic Power didn’t always see eye to eye with the pragmatic Rhodes. That gives this otherwise sympathetic portrait of the Obama Administration a bit of an edge; so does the constant dark cloud throughout 2016 in the shape of a potential President Trump…

2018-U.S. 89 min. Color. Directed by Greg Barker.
