WAR TAKES NO PRISONERS. 

Director Elmo Nüganen took on the Estonian War of Independence (1918-1920) in Names in Marble (2002); this time, it’s World War II and a portrait of Estonian soldiers fighting on both the German and Soviet sides. The war is drawing to a close and the men are disillusioned, trapped between two authoritarian systems that couldn’t care less about Estonia as a nation. Not a great drama with memorable characters that stand out, but tragic and intense nevertheless, with plenty of battlefield action. We do get a clear feeling for how humiliating and confusing it must have been to serve under ideologically irrelevant leaders.
