Practical Magic

Two Massachusetts sisters (Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman) who come from a long line of witches live with a curse that says any man who falls in love with them is doomed. Director Griffin Dunne followed up Addicted to Love (1997) with another romantic film, this one with a supernatural theme. A sense of humor, love and thrills come together with very uneven results; what sinks the movie is a general feeling that it doesn’t know how to generate tension. The two stars are charming together though, and Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are fun as their aunts.

1998-U.S. 104 min. Color Widescreen. Directed by Griffin Dunne. Novel: Alice Hoffman. Cast: Sandra Bullock (Sally Owens), Nicole Kidman (Gillian Owens), Goran Visnjic (James Angelov), Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Aidan Quinn… Evan Rachel Wood.
