In 1922, Nebraska rancher Wilfred James (Thomas Jane) convinces his 14-year-old son (Dylan Schmid) to help him murder his wife (Molly Parker) before she goes through with her plan to sell the property against their wishes. An adaptation of a grim Stephen King novella that turns into a slow-moving tragedy as everything goes wrong for father and son James. This is quite a slog, a dark experience in many ways, including the dirty, gravel-voiced appearance of Jane. An appropriately unpleasant atmosphere (especially if you donāt like rats), but undermined by the characters’ unconvincing relationships and motivations.
