Aging Marine veteran Thomas Highway (Clint Eastwood) is assigned a reconnaissance platoon that needs a lot of work, but he also finds a new enemy in the shape of a major (Everett McGill) with a stick up his ass… Vietnam veteran James Carabatsos wrote this entertaining story of how a grizzled Korea vet clashes with younger generations; the Marine Corps had its reservations, but still helped get the movie made. Silly, and a faster pace wouldn’t have hurt, but there’s action near the end as Eastwood’s troops fight in the 1983 Grenada invasion. The star himself is more than half the movie as the gravel-voiced sergeant.
