Stockholm, early 1980s; young Rasmus and Benjamin (Adam Pålsson, Adam Lundgren) fall in love at the same time as the AIDS epidemic reaches Sweden and their circle of friends is soon diminished. Writer-comedian Jonas Gardell’s ambitious and very emotional chronicle of an era that was rarely discussed prior to his books and this miniseries was based on actual experiences and memories. Never quite reaches the political impact and dramatic heights of Angels in America (2003), but still touching, funny and frightening on its journey to the inevitably bitter, dark end. Gardell also paints a frustrating portrait of religious fanaticism and a mainstream society that would prefer to sweep the epidemic under the rug. Very strong lead performances.
