The Box

In 1976, a married couple (Cameron Diaz, James Marsden) are offered a box with a button; if they press it they will receive one million dollars… but someone somewhere in the world will also die. After his failure with Southland Tales (2007), Richard Kelly mounted a comeback with a thriller that shared a few similarities with his Donnie Darko (2001). The story, which was also filmed decades ago as a Twilight Zone episode, has good performances, a dark atmosphere and nice period details… but Kelly’s conspiracy-mongering tends to overshadow all that.

2009-U.S. 113 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed byĀ Richard Kelly. Story: Richard Matheson (“Button, Button”). Cast: Cameron Diaz (Norma Lewis), James Marsden (Arthur Lewis), Frank Langella (Arlington Steward), James Rebhorn, Holmes Osborne, Sam Oz Stone.
