THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE WATER.Ā
Not really a remake of the original Piranha (1978) as much as a cheap, humorous 3D thrillride that wants to evoke memories of Jaws (1975), complete with Elisabeth Shue as a very Brody-esque small-town sheriff and Richard Dreyfuss in a glorified cameo as “Matt”. Definitely not exciting (and unfortunately not very funny either), but the second half offers an orgy of attacks by the super piranhas, resulting in a bizarre gorefest. The cast is there to be eaten, with Jerry O’Connell’s “Girls Gone Wild”-type director facing a particularly grim fate.Ā
2010-U.S. 88 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Alexandre Aja. Cast: Ving Rhames (Fallon), Elisabeth Shue (Julie Forrester), Christopher Lloyd (Carl Goodman), Jerry O’Connell, Adam Scott, Ricardo Chavira… Eli Roth, Richard Dreyfuss.
Trivia: Aja allegedly planned cameos for both Joe Dante and James Cameron, directors of the original Piranha movies, but it didn’t happen.
