IN A WORLD WHERE EVERYONE CAN ONLY TELL THE TRUTH… HE’S JUST INVENTED THE LIE!
Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) lives in a world where everyone is truthful all the time; one day he suddenly tells a lie… and realizes the potential of this invention. The first movie Gervais ever co-directed is a largely formulaic (and quite American) story with a central romance that can only end one way. Still, its premise is clever and the movie eventually turns into a satire on religion that isn’t without bite. It also has emotional moments and the constant truth-telling and its consequences is genuinely funny. Gervais does his routine and is worth a look; he’s also supported by an amusing cast of talents.
