Southland Tales

In the near future, America has turned into a police state and a German company offers an energy solution that has unimaginable consequences. The Donnie Darko director delivered a long-winded, confusing snorefest with overly ambitious ideas coupled with too much silliness that was widely derided by critics. A large, unwieldy but interesting cast are clearly having fun, and Moby’s score tries to lend the project some atmosphere, but it’s for naught.

2007-U.S. 144 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed byĀ Richard Kelly. Music: Moby. Cast: Dwayne Johnson (Boxer Santaros/Jericho Cane), Seann William Scott (Roland Taverner/Ronald Taverner), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Krysta Now), Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, Nora Dunn… John Larroquette, Jon Lovitz, Amy Poehler, Miranda Richardson, Wallace Shawn, Kevin Smith, Christopher Lambert, Janeane Garofalo.

Trivia: Kelly also released three graphic-novel prequels to the film, written by him and illustrated by Brett Weldele.
