WHAT DOES A SCANNER SEE?
In the near future, an undercover cop posing as Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) shares a house with two slackers (Robert Downey, Jr., Woody Harrelson), but falls victim to a mind-altering drug, Substance D. Versatile director Richard Linklater’s take on the Philip K. Dick dystopia is oddly enough made with rotoscoped animation, but the results are pretty annoying; you can see everything Linklater’s shot, including the actors, but the view is still clouded by this animated filter. Some like it; I find it distracting. It doesn’t help that the story is slow and uninvolving.Ā
