In 1898, “Print” Ritter and his nephew (Robert Duvall, Thomas Haden Church) are driving a herd of horses when they run into, and accidentally become guardians of, a group of Chinese girls destined for prostitution. 17 years after Lonesome Dove, Duvall returns to familiar grounds playing a character that shares traits with Augustus McCrae; he’s very good and ably supported by Haden Church as the serious-minded nephew. Seasoned director Walter Hill delivers a visually attractive Western, but the partly reality-based story would have been better served by a tightened, two-hour TV movie.
