SOME PEOPLE CAN BUY THEIR WAY OUT OF ANYTHING. EXCEPT THE PAST.
Former private eye Harry Ross (Paul Newman) runs an errand for an old friend (Gene Hackman) and gets himself entangled in a murder mystery. Newman reunited with his Nobodyās Fool (1994) director for an old-fashioned crime story that is a pleasant time-filler and not much else. The actors are the whole show, with Newman as the crusty old private dick, Hackman and Susan Sarandon as the couple who has a slightly odd relationship with him, and James Garner as his hard-drinking buddy. The story is for the birds and the killer is too easily identified.
