Carnival of Souls

SHE WAS A STRANGER AMONG THE LIVING.

Church organist Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) survives an accident where several others drown; a short while later she’s haunted by a mysterious phantom figure. The director, who had mostly made documentaries and education films, is now chiefly remembered for this cult thriller. His inexperience shows in the action scenes, but he knew how to make the phantom figures look as startling as possible; the ending at the carnival is memorable. Creepy organ music is effectively used… but the acting and the thin story are liabilities.

1962-U.S. 83 min. B/W. Directed byĀ Herk Harvey. Cast: Candace Hilligoss (Mary Henry), Sidney Berger (John Linden), Frances Feist (Mrs. Thomas), Herk Harvey, Stan Levitt, Art Ellison.

Trivia: Remade as Carnival of Souls (1998).
