YOU DON’T HAVE TO BELIEVEā¦ TO SUFFER.
23-year-old Pittsburgh hairdresser and atheist Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette) exhibits signs of the stigmata; a Catholic priest (Gabriel Byrne) is sent to investigate. Some critics have compared this thriller to The Exorcist (1973) and there is indeed a Max von Sydow kind of priest present, as well as a Linda Blair kind of girl. On top of the stigmata affair weāre treated to a conspiracy in the Vatican. What hurts this movie is its directorās embarrassing fondness of bombastic effects and hysterical theatrics. Is that supposed to scare us?
