banditsThis may look like another Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), with its story about two best friends and runaway jailbirds who get entangled with an Etta Place kind of character, a woman trying to find a new life. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t amount to much and is too leisurely paced. Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton are quite affable as the bandits; having this particular woman cross their path is an ingredient that feels somewhat contrived, but Cate Blanchett is so good an actress that she certainly makes this redhead attractive and intriguing.

2001-U.S. 123 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Barry Levinson. Cast: Bruce Willis (Joe Blake), Billy Bob Thornton (Terry Collins), Cate Blanchett (Kate Wheeler), Troy Garity, Brian F. O’Byrne, Bobby Slayton… January Jones.

Trivia: Val Kilmer was allegedly considered for the part of Joe Blake.
