ARB Architects have been named the winner of the 2025 AR Emerging awards, receiving a £5,000 prize. Selected from a shortlist of 15 young practices, the studio was chosen by an esteemed panel of judges, including previous AR Emerging winner and founder of Bangladesh-based practice URBANA Kashef Chowdhury; Austrian architect and rammed-earth specialist Martin Rauch; and architect and curator Catharine Rossi.

The jury highlighted the ‘championing of handcraft, memory and intangible culture’, as well as the reuse of existing structures and materials from the region. They commended practice founder Nguyễn Hà for being ‘as much an activist and advocate as an architect’ and emphasised that this way of practising ‘has relevance beyond Vietnam.’

Pihlmann Architects were highly commended by the judges, who praised the practice’s ‘thorough, consistent and scientific’ approach to mining existing buildings for their materials. ‘Pihlmann Architects are taking a brave route,’ the jury said. ‘Repurposing rather than killing buildings is the future.’

Atelier Régis Roudil Architectes have been awarded this year’s Peter Davey Prize – a prize presented to the editors’ choice. ‘This practice showcases that low-carbon, bio-based materials can be used for a range of programmes and clients – from social housing to the French presidency,’ explains Manon Mollard, editor of The Architectural Review. ‘Unstabilised rammed earth does not have a lobby as it is not easily monetised – we hope this award is the lobby it deserves.’

The winners of the awards, announced today (Thursday 20 November) at the St Pancras Campus, designed by Caruso St John for W.RE, received a trophy made of 90 per cent construction and demolition waste, designed by low-carbon brick manufacturer Kenoteq.
First launched in 1999, the AR Emerging awards grant early recognition to young designers and celebrate the architectural stars of tomorrow. Since 2018, the awards have recognised a body of work rather than a single building, and aspiring candidates share a small portfolio of three projects with us: a completed building, a work in progress and an idea. Early winners include Boonserm Premthada, Thomas Heatherwick and Frida Escobedo – more recently, A Threshold, TO, Carles Enrich Studio and Carla Juaçaba.
