Building bricks: low-carbon trophies for AR Emerging awards 2025

The winners of the AR Emerging awards will be presented with a bespoke trophy made by low-carbon brick manufacturer Kenoteq

The winners of the AR Emerging awards 2025, announced on Thursday 20 November, will receive trophies made of an innovative low-carbon material pioneered by trophy partner Kenoteq.

Winners of the AR Emerging awards will be announced and presented with their bespoke trophies on Thursday 20 November at the St Pancras Campus, 100 Royal College Street, London NW1 0TH, designed by Caruso St John for WRE. The winning and highly commended practices, as well as the Peter Davey Prize winner, selected from this year’s shortlist, will receive a handcrafted object made from 90 per cent construction and demolition waste.

Each practice shortlisted for this year’s awards will receive a small token, crafted from different colour mixes

The objects were made by Kenoteq in their factory in East Lothian in Scotland in the same way the manufacturer produces their low-carbon K-BRIQ, which is unfired and fully recyclable.

Each object was cut to expose the recycled aggregate from which they are made

Every piece was hand-prepared and sanded to a fine finish before being sealed with a biodegradable coating for protection

The awards logo and AR monogram was printed onto the objects, completing a process that reflects Kenoteq’s practical approach to circular design – creating durable, low-carbon products from construction waste while maintaining a focus on craft, precision and material honesty.

The material contains more than 90 per cent construction and demolition waste and is certified for both interior and exterior use

The AR Emerging trophies have been used as an opportunity to experiment with different materials: in 2023, the trophies were made of recycled ceramic by partner Alusid; cork was used in 2022; the 2020 trophies were crafted out of rammed earth; and in 2019, the trophies were made out of terrazzo.

Launched in 1999, the AR Emerging awards grant early recognition to young designers and celebrate the architectural stars of tomorrow. Are you interested in supporting the AR Emerging awards? Contact frazer.stokes@emap.com to find out more
